Finding My Roots

It was in October of 2003 that I decided to trace my family history. I knew it would be difficult and time consuming but I wanted answers, so I set out to discover what I could about those who came before me.

I wanted to go back as far as I could on both my mother and father's side of the family. Other than that, I just went with the flow.

The first step for me was to talk to all my sisters to see what information they might have. Like me, they did not remember much, but I did get some hints and phone numbers of those older than us who might know more. So, from there I started calling relatives - some of them I knew, and some I did not.

Later on in my search I learned a lot from the internet, and from people I have met online. Their help is greatly appreciated.

Here is what I have learned so far. More will be added as I gather more info.

My parents were Arben Lewis Holder (Oct. 22, 1918 - Jan. 12, 1992) and Doxie Laura Rambo (Feb 1, 1919 - Mar. 15, 1996). Dad was born in Washington County, Tennessee and my Mom in Johnson County, Tennessee.

Arben Holder was the son of Steve Alexander Holder (Feb. 2, 1874 - Jan. 29, 1950) and Sarah Estep (Feb. 17, 1880 - June 2, 1964).

Steve was born in Bakersville, North Carolina. His parents were Daniel Holder and Martha Dugger. He had 12 brothers and 1 sister.

The parents of Sarah were Henry C. Estep (Aug. 22, 1846 - Feb. 9, 1931) and Martha Margeret Garland (Jan. 2, 1842 - Mar. 2, 1932). Henry was born in Carter County, Tennessee.

The parents of Henry Estep were John Estep and Elizabeth Oliver (1811-1875?). Elizabeth was born somewhere in Tennessee. She was the daughter of George R. Oliver and Susannah White.

George was the son of John Oliver (born between 1750-1755) and Mary __. John was the son of George Oliver and Jemina Reagan.

Jemina was the daughter of Charles Reagan and Elizabeth ____.

For now this little bit of info is all I have about my Dad's family.

Doxie Rambo was the daughter of James Webster Rambo (May 15, 1878 - May 16, 1964) and Zella Mae Robinson (July 30, 1882 - Aug. 3, 1965). They were from Johnson County, Tennessee.

James Rambo was the son of William H. Rambo (born either on Jan. 19 or Nov. 16, 1840 and died on Oct. 30, 1901) and Melvina Blackburn (May 29, 1845 - Mar. 24, 1909) They were also from Johnson County.

William Rambo was the son of Aaron Rambo (Jan. 20, 1800 - June 20, 1867) and Harriet Wilson (born around 1800). For more info on Aaron Rambo click here.

Aaron possibly was the son of Ezekiel Rambo. He was born between 1750 and 1760. He may have died around Nov 4, 1837. If this is the case then Aaron's mother was Elizabeth Mattson. She was born between 1750 and 1760. She died about 1834.

The above mentioned Melvina Blackburn was the daughter of Noah Blackburn (born in 1815) and Nancy Wilson (born 1817). He was born in North Carolina and she in Carter County, Tennessee.

Nancy Wilson was the daughter of Garland Wilson (June 26, 1789 - Aug. 24, 1850) and Mary Polly Cook. He was born in North Carolina and died in Johnson County, Tennessee. For more info on Garland Wilson and his family click here.

Garland Wilson was the son of John Wilson. He was born in 1745 in Salisbury, North Carolina. He died on Sept. 15, 1804 in Carter County.

Now back to my grandmother, Zella Robinson.
Zella Robinson was the daughter of Dr. Nick Robinson. He lived in Butler, Tennessee. From what I hear he delivered many babies in Johnson and Carter Counties. His full name was Nicholas Daniel Robinson, and he was born Jan. 10, 1858 In Johnson County, Tn. He died in Carter County, Tn, on May 29 1937.

Dr. Nick was the son of Daniel Robinson (1807 - 1880) and Catherine Stout. He was born in Carter County and died in Johnson County, Tn. Catherine was born about 1813 and died between 1860 and 1866 in Johnson County.

Daniel was the son of Joseph Robinson, Sr. (born 1783 in Virginia and died on Aug. 1, 1853) and Mary Sarah Stout. They lived in Johnson County, Tn. She was born in Virginia on Jul 8, 1787 and died sometime after 1860 in Johnson County, Tn.).

Mary's parents were Godfrey Daniel Stout and Catherine Magdalene Voltzen. Godfrey Daniel Stout was born on Nov 23, 1750 in Bucks County Pa. and died on Jan 13, 1845 in Johnson County, Tn. He was buried at Asa Shoun Cemetery, Little Doe, Johnson Co, Tn. Catherine Voltzen was born on Mar. 21, 1755 in Shenandoah Valley, VA and died in 1842. She was buried at Asa Shoun Cemetery, Little Doe, Johnson County.

The above mentioned Catherine Stout was born around 1813 and died between 1860 and 1866. Catherine's parents were John H. Stout and Sarah Grindstaff. John (Dec. 16, 1783 - Oct. 26, 1860) was born in Shenandoah County, Va. and died in Johnson County, Tn. Sarah Grindstaff was born about 1788 and died around 1870 in Johnson County, Tn.

Godfrey Daniel Stout was the son of Johannes Daniel (Stout) Staudt (who was born about 1693 in Germany and died before Aug. 7, 1770 in Stony Creek, Frederick Co, Va.) and Anna Elisabetha Keller. They were married on Nov. 27, 1736.

Johannes Daniel Staudt was the son of Johannes Staudt (1657 - about 1715) and Catharina ? He was born in Ober-Bosenbach, Palatine, Germany.

Johannes Staudt was the son of Hans Nickel Staudt and Anna Maria Muller. He was born in 1621 in Meisenheim, Palatine, Germany and died in 1684 in Bosenbach, Palatine, Germany. I have no info on the birth or death of Anna.

Hans Nickel Staudt was the son of Hans Staudt (1595-1651). Also this Hans was the son of Hans Staudt (born in 1567). This Hans was also the son of Hans (The Elder) Staudt (born 1545) and Catharina Kiesel.

Hans (The Elder) was the son of Diebold Staudt (born about 1510 and died about 1593).

The previously mentioned Catherine Magdalene Voltzen was the daughter of Johan Peter Voltz and Maria Elishabetha Mintzin. (The 'en' on the end of Voltzen simply meant 'daughter of'. This was a common way to end a surmane in that time). Johan was born on Jan. 14, 1727 in Grossgartach Neckar, Wuertemberg and he died on Nov. 5, 1811 in Stony Creek, Shenandoah Co. Va. To see the will of Johan click here.

Johan was the son of Hans Balthus Voltz and Maria Diem. Hans was born on Jun. 4, 1699 in Grossgartach Neckar, Wuertemberg and died on Aug, 29, 1735 in the same city.

Hans was the son of Johan Jacob Voltz and Christiana Schroettlin. Johan was born in 1648 in Grossgartach Neckar, Wuertemberg and died on Mar. 26, 1742.

Johan was the son of George Voltz and Doretha Bretzig. George was born in 1602 in Massenbach, Neckar, Wuertemberg and died on Mar. 24, 1668 in Boeckingen, Neckar, Wuertemberg.

George was the son of Andreas Voltz and Anna Voltz. Andreas was born in 1586 in Massenbach, Neckar, Wuertemberg and died on Jul, 28, 1614 in the same city.
